#TakeFiveWith Besma Whayeb
Could you tell us about yourself and your job role? And one hobby/fun fact?
I write an ethical fashion and lifestyle blog called Curiously Conscious, as well as a digital community platform called Ethical Influencers. My aim is to increase and promote independent media championing steps towards a more sustainable, ethical way of living. A fun fact about me: my name means "smile" in Arabic!
What is a typical day like for you?
There are no typical days! My work routine is incredibly flexible - some days, I'll spend the whole day writing, other days I'll be meeting with brands, attending events, or doing photoshoots. I love the variation in my days, but I have implemented 7-hour work days so I can best take care of myself and my mental health.
Could you tell us how you got into your role?
My journey into self-employment started over four years ago: I started writing my blog alongside my Business and French degree. After graduating, I began working at marketing and creative agencies, where I strengthened my understanding of marketing and copywriting. Eventually, my blog grew into a profitable business, and I decided to go full-time in November 2017. I haven't looked back since!
What motivates you to do a good job?
Writing about ethical and sustainable living means I have to really research what I'm writing about - it's my responsibility to have the right information, and share this with my readers in a friendly and easy-to-understand way. They may make similar changes - such as using less plastic, or wearing ethically made clothing - so it's important that they understand why the change they are making really is making a difference. My audience has always been so friendly, open, and collaborative, that they keep me motivated to do a good job with everything I put online.
How do you learn at work?
I learn in a number of ways - I read research papers, news articles, and press releases on a daily basis. I listen to podcasts and I enjoy watching videos too. And of course, the visual power of Instagram is helpful as well!
What are your aims for the next year? For example, if you work in accessibility do you have any plans to help make workplaces more inclusive? If you work in Learning and Development how are you going to promote workplace learning?
My current growth aims are for Ethical Influencers, the free community I set up for bloggers and influencers writing about eco topics. As the community is growing, my aim is to create an even more inviting space that everyone feels welcome in. I'm currently researching how to best reach more diverse people, and invite them into the conversation around caring for the environment and caring where they shop.
