#TakeFiveWith Vivienne Aiyela
Could you tell us about yourself and your job role? And one hobby/fun fact?
Senior Diversity and Inclusion Professional and Non Executive Director in Football. A fun fact.... I sew 95% of my own clothes and I attend boxing training sessions 3 times a week and I love it!!!
What is a typical day like for you?
It is varied and could be meetings, writing reports, interacting with staff. I try to make time to read reports, keep up to date on trends, etc.
Could you tell us how you got into your role?
As a Non Executive Director by applying. There was a change in the Sport Governance Code in 2017 which meant Sport Boards needed to have greater representation with at least 30% Gender balance. The then CEO was transforming the business and saw an opportunity and the importance of a Diverse Board.
What motivates you to do a good job?
When you have experienced race discrimination and other forms of discrimination it is not a good experience, so it is important that others don’t have the same experiences. So I want to improve the workplaces, educate senior leaders to understand how the lack of action impacts not just on staff, potential staff but also customers and potential customers
How do you learn at work?
I believe in continuous professional development with means not just learning on the job but other forms of learning such as attending workshops and seminars, speaking at events, listening to podcasts, reading books and articles, interacting with others including from the same or different cultures.
What are your aims for the next year? For example, if you work in accessibility do you have any plans to help make workplaces more inclusive? If you work in Learning and Development how are you going to promote workplace learning?
I am looking to combine all my experience including social change into working internationally on improving employees experience at work and improving customers’ experience. Also improving the understanding an impact of discrimination - racism, homophobia and sexism in football with a greater need for diverse representation in ALL levels in the workplace. No more tick boxes.
